Secondary Education: Math
Why Study Math Education at UTF?
The Math Education major equips future servant leaders with knowledge of the diverse learners and math content they will teach, skills in planning instruction, assessing learning, and managing the classroom, as well as character reflecting appropriate interaction with the school community, lifelong learning, and a calling as a Christian servant leader with a biblical worldview for Kingdom service. The Professional Teaching Objectives for this major are based on the TAPS standards. The Math Education program leads to certification in grades 6 through 12.
Teacher Education majors in their senior year can apply for the opportunity to complete a one-year, paid student teaching internship with Stephens County School District. In this program, students serve as the teacher of record and have their own class or set of students. Because we believe teaching secondary math is a calling, the School of Education seeks to cultivate a uniquely Christian learning community through coursework with in-field experiences, a yearlong clinical practice, and faculty support of candidates in their pursuit of truth with godly character for service in public, private, and international schools teaching at the secondary level.

Math Education Courses
The Education major is a 127 hour program that includes 51 hours of general education courses (including 15 hours of Bible & Theology), 9 hours of open electives, and 69 hours in Education-specific courses (15 of which are dedicated to math education).

What can you do with a Math Education degree?
When you earn a Math Education degree, you will find that there are many career opportunities available to you. Graduates are qualified for a wide range of jobs, such as:
Middle or High School Teacher
Naturally, many math education graduates go on to teach science at middle or high schools. Students will be prepared to teach at public, private or international schools.
School Administration/Coach
While further education may be required, some secondary science students aspire to become a school administrator, seeking roles as a principal or headmaster. Many students that pursue math education degrees have an interest in becoming a coach. Gaining certification as a teacher will provide graduates many opportunities for coaching at the high school level.
STEM Education Specialist
Graduates may pursue careers as STEM education specialists, helping schools develop math curriculum, instructional resources, and innovative learning experiences for students.
Instructional Coach
Experienced educators may become instructional coaches, supporting teachers through professional development, classroom mentoring, and improving math instruction across a school or district.
Curriculum Developer
Math Education graduates may contribute to the development of curriculum, assessments, and educational resources for schools, publishers, or educational organizations.
